Tonight's read: Threshing Day by Rebecca YarrosOn this month's bestseller list

Rebecca Yarros

Chapter Nine

For years she had trusted her place to receipts, a sock, and once, regrettably, a slice of cheese. Each of them betrayed her. The receipt fell in the bath. The sock was taken by the dryer. We do not speak of the cheese.

Then came the magnetic bookmark. It folded over the page with a sound so crisp and so final that the cat sat up. Snap. Her place, held. Forever, or at least until chapter ten.

She snapped it open and shut four hundred times that first night. For science. The cat moved to another room.

Threshing Day

She tested it the way any sensible person would: upside down, in a tote bag, on a bumpy bus, and once while being chased by a goose. It did not budge. The goose was furious.

Her book club noticed. Margaret asked where she got it. Deborah pretended not to care, then bought six. Somewhere, every dog-eared corner trembled.

She found her page in half a second, sighed happily, and settled in for one more chapter. Just one.

And then, of course, someone needed her.
